GEORGE GALLERY is pleased to present EYES IN THE HEAT, a group exhibition with works by LAUREN COLLINGS, THERESA DADDEZIO, DAVID DUPUIS, SHAUN ELLISON,JONATHAN EHRENBERG, SOPHIA FRYDMAN, SAIRA MCLAREN, ANDREA MIHALOVIC, and KEIKO NARAHASHI. The exhibition, which takes its name from Jackson Pollock’s 1946 painting, will open on Friday, June 15, with a reception from 7 to 9 pm at 117 Grattan Street #222 in Brooklyn. GEORGE GALLERY is open Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 5 pm and by appointment.

EYES IN THE HEAT at GEORGE GALLERY re-imagines the landscape, both the world around us and an internal realm, with highly personal works that project an atmospheric intensity and a strong sense of mood. The artists in the exhibition are often exploring the hidden places, in both nature and and in the constructed, and or man-made landscapes we create for ourselves. The views presented operate as both the artist's inner life, literally or metaphorically and the as vignettes that seems almost as if the wool or skin has been pulled back form the surface to expose the inner self/world. 

Shaun Ellison depicts  fluid spaces - a space suspended in and defined by, paint.  Like Sophia’s Friedman’s work, they’re opulent and without clear definition of the emotional space they are occupying. In Jonathan Ehrenberg’s video piece, Moth,  based on the poem Man-Moth by Elizabeth Bishop, is a dark and beautiful mystery.  The Moth Man travels up, from his underground nest to the city like the Moth in the poem, to explore the city by night and live out his fantasies.. He is drawn to the lights of the city and to the allure of the moon and the desires they promise to fulfill, even though he knows they will lead to his demise. Teresa Daddazio’s paintings are like layers of skin being peeled away to see the inner workings of a mind --- not literal body parts or brains but  a kind of intuited sense of what might be there. Daddzio is contemplating what really constitutes consciousness in her work. Lauren Collings creates condensed organic spaces with apertures of light and hints of distant landscapes.  Her organic forms are  in a state of coalescing and becoming at the same time, eventually dissolving  and dispersing. David Dupuis’s work are poems of memory, desire and material.  The drawings and collages are little windows into daydreams with everyday interruptions of objects of desire and past conflicts and pleasures. Keiko Narahashi’s  ceramics are shapes that feel suspended; floating in space at the same time that they contain painted spaces on and within their surfaces. The sculptures are  between human and inanimate, and between flat earth and the third dimension. Sophia Friedman’s are enchanted and illuminated scenes.  The lighting reads as both life-giving electricity and equally as  something with destructive potential.  They’re glowing ,  luminous, drenched with  humidity. Saira Mclaren’s paintings capture and echo vibrations, forms and energies seen and felt in nature.  Abstract patterns and marks coalesce into suggestions of figures, eyes and body parts. They  are an exploration of sensations from nature expressed through synthetic material and color. Andrea Mihalovic’s are small jeweled seascapes with ambiguous and enchanted monstrous occurrences They are enthralling and compelling at the same time that they’re threatening. They are ambiguous as to time an place depicted, is the prehistoric time or post apocalyptic, it is on earth or other worldly?
 

Bios

Lauren Collings b. 1981 in Pennsylvania and lives and works in Brooklyn.She received her BFA from Carnegie Mellon University in 2003 and her MFA from the New York Studio School in 2009. She has participated in residencies at the BAU Institute, Otranto, Italy and the Wassaic Project, NY. Solo exhibitions include The Gallery@1GAP, Richard Meier on Prospect Park, Brooklyn and at the Lynchburg
College Daura Gallery, VA. Group shows include Brian Morris Gallery, Valentine Gallery, Parallel Art Space, Orgy Park and Blythe Gallery at the Imperial College London, England. 

Theresa Daddezio recieved her MFA from Hunter College and her BFA from Purchase College, She has exhibited in various artist run spaces in Brooklyn and New York

David Dupuis b. 1959  Holyoke, MA and lives in New York, NY. He has mounted numerous solo exhibitions at Derek Eller Gallery, and has had solo exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston,  Anton Kern Gallery, White Columns and Schmidt Contemporary in Los Angeles. His work has been included in group exhibitions at the New Museum, MoMA PS1, the Rubin Museum of Art, apexart, Paula Cooper Gallery, Paul Kasmin Gallery, Matthew Marks Gallery, and Andrea Rosen Gallery. Dupuis' work is included in public collections at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the New Museum, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, The New School for Social Research, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. In 1982 Dupuis received a B.F.A. in Art and a B.A. in Theater at the University of Washington, Seattle. He also attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture the same year.

Jonathan Ehrenberg received a BA from Brown University, and an MFA from Yale. His work has been included in exhibitions at MoMA PS1, SculptureCenter, Nicelle Beauchene Gallery (New York), LAXART (Los Angeles), David Castillo (Miami), Futura Center (Prague), and Galeria Espacio Minimo (Madrid). His work has been reviewed in The New York Times, The New Yorker, and Art in America, and he has participated in residencies at LMCC Workspace, Harvestworks, Islip, Skowhegan, Triangle, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, and Glenfiddich in Scotland. 

Shaun Ellison b. 1984, in Durban, South Africa and lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He graduated Business and Philosophy at the University of Louisiana, in Lafayette, continued his education at School of Visual Arts in New York City and in 2013 Ellison attended Painting and Drawing Summer Program at NY Academy of Art.

Sophia Frydman is an artist and psychologist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. She received her MFA from the University of Chicago in 2010, and has been a resident at ACRE residency and the Mountain School of the Arts.

Andrea Mihalovic b. in the former Czechoslovakia and lives and works in NYC. She studied painting at the College of New Rochelle and received her Masters of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

Saira McLaren b. Toronto, Canada lives and works in Brooklyn and the Catskills, NY. She received her BFA from Ontario College of Art & Design, Canada 2003 and has recently exhibited at Sargent’s Daughters,  Essex Flowers, New York and The Willows, Brooklyn. She is a recipient of the 2015 Edward Albee Foundation Residency. Her work has been reviewed in Artforum, Time Out New York and New York Magazine. 

Keiko Narahashi b. in Japan, lives and works in NYC, She received her MFA in  Painting, Bard College, her  B.F.A.  Parsons School of Design. In  2006 she was awarded a Painting fellowship grant, New York Foundation for the Arts, the Marie Walsh Sharpe Studio Program in 2005 and in 2003 The Anne Klein Prize, Unframed First Look and in  1999 Artist in the Marketplace Program, Bronx Museum of the Arts, Bronx, NY.
